All Power to All People by Hank Willis Thomas
“All Power to All People", by Hank Willis Thomas, is an eye-catching sculpture of an Afro pick, towering at 10 feet tall. This iconic grooming tool, commonly used within the African American community, is much more than just an accessory; it's a powerful symbol of cultural pride and identity. The combination of the Afro pick and the raised black power fist, sparks vibrant memories of family gatherings, unity, and the joyous spirit of cookouts.
In 2020, during its nationwide tour, this piece made a stop in Atlanta. It was a unique moment in time when social distancing was the norm. To bring our community together safely, I teamed up with “Dope Pedalers” to organize an engaging, socially distanced community bike ride. It was a fun and creative way to connect and celebrate our shared heritage while honoring the important message behind the sculpture.
